Most of us have seen the word emet before. This Hebrew word is typically translated as truth. However to get a real good understanding of the word it is essential to look at the Hebrew. There are three characters used; Aleph, Mem, and Tav. This spells EMT in English. We add an “e” to EMet for pronunciation.
Aleph is the first character of the Aleph Bet. It represents silent strength. Think of an Ox, it will simply go where it wants to go. It does not make any sound, it simply does. This silent strength has been associated with our Creator’s will. Father in Hebrew is Av which is spelt Aleph Bet. Which means strength of the home (Bet means house or home). The father is meant to lead the family with strength but a kind strength such as HaShem exemplifies.
Mem is the middle character of the Aleph Bet. It represents water. Water is essential for our existence and also it cleanses as we see the washings taking place in the Torah. It can also overwhelm or subdue like a flood. Water was also used with other ingredients to create glue. In fact Eem or Emah (Hebrew) means strength of water or strong water. The mother of a home is the glue of the family. A husband and wife team with the strength of the father and the control of the mother creates the desired home.
Tav is the final character of the Aleph Bet. It means sign. Like putting an “X” on the map to show where the treasure is located. We can say this represents the physical realm, the ground that supports the conclusion of creation.
Ask yourself: Is there a pattern emerging when these three characters become the word EMeT?
