Desire can be defined as something longed for, coveted, and a wanting. It is personal and rarely involves the betterment of others. It almost always involves the betterment of self at the expense of others.
Everything we do is a product of a desire. Every action and
reaction is a function of our desire being met or not. We eat curtain foods
because we desire that food. Advertisers focus on conditioning our desires
towards their products. We get upset because a desire was not being met. Desire
is THE driving force in our lives. Now these desires can be conscious or
subconscious.
Just as the Creator has desires for us, we have our own
desires.
We find that the Tenth Commandment is all about coveting, which is desire.
Adultery and stealing are mentioned in this commandment, which is already
covered in the Seventh and Eighth Commandments. Why are they repeated?
Because the 613 commandments are in fact not dos and don’ts as much as they are
connected to our desires. The commandments are to straighten out our desires.
To take those 613 desires, which are inherently part of us, and transform them
into desires that are in keeping with the Creator’s desire for us.
